When you use the EXCELCS driver to import an Excel file, variables of type CHARACTER double in length.

This issue occurs when you run SAS^® 9.4M4 with any non-wlatin1 single-byte encoding such as wcyrillic, wlatin2, or whebrew.

CHARACTER variables are doubled in length when you import an Excel file using the SAS PC Files Server. This problem occurs when you use a non-wlatin1 single-byte encoding SAS 9.4M4 session. This results in an impact on size of the variables and data sets.
